The Federal Government has directed all university students—both new and returning—as well as academic and non-academic staff to update their birth records through the newly launched digital Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS).
According to the directive, individuals are required to obtain verifiable birth certificates from the National Population Commission (NPC) either by visiting any NPC office nationwide or registering through the official VITALREG self-service portals:

or

The directive follows the recent launch of the digital e-CRVS system by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at improving Nigeria’s civil registration system, ensuring data integrity, and enhancing service delivery across government agencies.
In a compliance letter sent to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) by the Federal Ministry of Education, the NPC emphasized that the presidential order applies to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The letter stated that the new system is part of a broader strategy to enhance data accuracy and administrative efficiency nationwide.
The e-CRVS system is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s population data management and support better policy planning in health, education, and other social sectors.
